German Jews advised to conceal faith amid rising anti-Semitism

According to government reports, hate crimes against Jews in Germany increased 20% last year. The number of physical attacks against Jews increased from 37 in 2017 to 62 in 2018.
Up to 90% of attacks were conducted by supporters of far-right groups.
"The increasingly frequent attacks against Jews are shameful for our country," says Justice Minister Katarina Barley. "Right-wing movements are attacking our democracy and are targeting our peaceful coexistence."
This weekend, Germany's anti-Semitism Commissioner Felix Klein warned Jews not to wear kippahs in public.
"Anti-Semitism has always existed in Germany [but is now] showing its ugly face more openly," said Klein. "I cannot advise Jews to wear the kippah everywhere all the time in Germany."
The Details
Klein blamed the increase in anti-Semitism on a rise in "social disinhibition and coarseness" including hate speech on social media and called for special training so that police, lawyers, and other officials would better understand how to deal with the problem.
He did not mention any link between anti-Semitism and the millions of Muslim refugees now living in Germany.
"The word Jew as an insult was not common in my time when I went to school," continued Klein. "Now it is, and it's even an insult at schools where there's no Jews...So that is a growing concern and of course, we have to develop strategies to counter that."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a zero-tolerance approach when dealing with anti-Semitism. "People growing up today must know what people were capable of in the past," she said, "and we must work proactively to ensure that it is never repeated."
