Former FBI attorney initially believed Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted over email scandal
In a stunning interview, one of the men who was tasked with deciding if Hillary Clinton should be prosecuted for using a private email server for official public business revealed that he initially wanted to go after the twice-failed presidential candidate.
James Baker, one of the top attorneys working for the FBI at the time of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, reportedly told Congress in October that before being convinced otherwise, he thought Hillary Clinton should have been charged over the infamous email scandal.
Appalling, alarming actions from Clinton
Transcripts from Baker’s October testimony reveal that the attorney said that “up until the end,” he was ready to recommend prosecuting Clinton.
But after significant prodding from senior DOJ officials — possibly including James Comey and Andrew McCabe — Baker changed his mind.
According to Fox, Baker told legislators that based on “the nature and scope of the classified information…initially, when I looked at it, I thought these folks should know that this stuff is classified, that it was alarming what they were talking about, especially some of the most highly classified stuff.”
He went on to call Clinton’s actions “appalling” and “alarming.”
But Baker was somehow convinced that Clinton, who was at the time secretary of state and who had been working in politics for decades, did not have the “knowledge or criminal intent” to face charges for her crimes.
Convinced by the higher-ups
During his public address on the matter, former FBI Director James Comey, who was soon after fired by President Donald Trump, asserted that “no reasonable prosecutor” would be willing to bring a case against Hillary Clinton over her email scandal.
But it looks like Baker, one of the best prosecuting attorneys in the country, was ready to pull the trigger.
Could Baker’s initial feelings on this matter have been dead on?
Could high-ranking officials, perhaps even Comey and McCabe, have worked to persuade Baker otherwise until he cracked?
If anything, Americans should trust their Justice Department even less now that this information has come to light.
On the surface, it seems increasingly likely that the higher-ups in our Justice Department were focused on one thing and one thing only: making sure Hillary Clinton was never indicted — no matter the cost.
