President Trump agrees to postpone State of the Union Address

State of the Union

President Trump agrees to postpone State of the Union Address
No. It wasn’t a “cave.” It was showing respect for the institutions and traditions of self-government — something Nancy knows nothing about.

Last night President Trump agreed to hold off giving the State of the Union during the Shutdown.

As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative - I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over. I am not looking for an....

That second tweet there makes a great point.
In fact, let’s hop in the Wayback Machine to President Trump’s 2018 State of the Union address.
Toward the end, he said this:
And freedom stands tall over one more monument: this one. This Capitol. This living monument to the American people.
A people whose heroes live not only in the past, but all around us — defending hope, pride, and the American way.
They work in every trade. They sacrifice to raise a family. They care for our children at home. They defend our flag abroad. They are strong moms and brave kids. They are firefighters, police officers, border agents, medics, and Marines.
But above all else, they are Americans. And this Capitol, this city, and this Nation belong to them.
Our task is to respect them, to listen to them, to serve them, to protect them, and to always be worthy of them.
“This Capital. This living monument to the American people.”
“And this Capitol, this city, and this Nation belong to them.”
This is at the heart of self-government.
While some people might view this as President Trump caving to Nancy Pelosi, I don’t.
By agreeing to wait the President has done two things.
First, he takes away Nancy’s opportunity to prattle on about how she’s not going to let the President give the State of the Union until he does what she demands.
And more importantly:

So while Nancy, the Democrats, the media – and their Resistance monkeys on Twitter – might enjoy a little victory dance today, it will be short-lived.
And what’s more Schadenfreuderrific than watching the Democrats’ temporary glee curdle like month-old milk?
Second, as Joel Pollack pointed out:

By my thinking, the President wouldn’t decide to postpone this State of the Union unless he had already had his ducks lined up.
And that brings me to that quote from last year’s State of the Union address.
That quote reveals what is at the very heart of Trump’s presidency:
We the People.
And for too many decades, those in Washington forgot that our government, its institutions – the very Capitol itself – belong to us.
Trump’s presidency seeks to restore the foundations of self-government.
Congress is not Nancy Pelosi’s fiefdom.
It belongs to the American people.
And in her effort to prevent the President from speaking, Nancy makes it crystal clear that she doesn’t get it.
The President, however, does.
And I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to hear President Trump reiterate those words in his State of the Union this year.  That second tweet of his leads me to believe he will.

The history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber” is one of self-government – of, by and for the people.
Not of, by and for Nancy Pelosi.
It is the American People’s House — the living monument to We the People.
Trump made that clear in last year’s State of the Union address.
And he has even more reason to say it this time around.
So, no. It wasn’t a “cave.” It was showing respect for the institutions and traditions of self-government — something Nancy knows nothing about.
And in the end, when the State of the Union address is given, I think Madam Speaker just might regret starting this fight.
