Daily Bites of Prayers for the Kids on the Streets:

Series 4: My Home is Nowhere: Bite 16) What am I Supposed to do?

The young girl tried to smile but I could tell she wasn’t used to smiling. She nodded her head and quickly walked in. “There is a cafeteria down the hall,” I said. “Why don’t we get washed up and have something to eat? I will take you there. My name is Sister Mary Rose. What is your name?” ... “Dana,” she said. ....”Where are you from Dana?” ...”I am from nowhere” she answered bitterly. “I mean I used to be from somewhere but I can’t be from anywhere now.” I took her by the hand and led her to a sink and a bar of soap so she could wash off the dirt and grime. It was almost a full minute before her skin appeared from beneath the dirt. We hurried to the cafeteria where hot soup and sandwiches lined up neatly on the countertop. Dana grabbed her meal and rushed over politely to an empty table. It took her only five minutes to clean off the entire tray. “Thank you,” she said. “That was very good. Maybe I can come back again.” She said that half asking, half telling, hopefully asking to be invited back again. She got up from the table and started to leave. “You are welcome to stay,” I said.

Series 4: My Home is Nowhere: Bite 17) I Used to Live at Home:

Dana started to leave after thanking me for the meal. “Please stay tonight Dana. We have plenty of clean beds.” Actually, we were crammed with kids but I knew she needed help. “Can you tell me a little about yourself? How old are you? Is there someone I can call for you? After a pause, she spoke: “There used to be...but not anymore.” For a long time, she kept looking down and twisting her napkin in her hands. she was trying to decide a hundred things at one time. “Can I trust this lady? Should I tell her my story? Where will I sleep tonight if I go back on the street?” All these decisions were too serious and heartbreaking for a kid to have to worry about. Finally, the tears began to form. “I used to live in a real home,” she said. I used to have parents and 5 little brothers but my Dad left and never told us where or why. My Mom said I have to get a job and support myself. I didn’t know what to do?”

Series 4: My Home is Nowhere: Bite 18) No Bed to Sleep in:

Dana poured out her story as tears were rolling down her cheeks. “When my Dad walked out my Mother couldn’t take it. She tried to work but it just got to her. She told me I am old enough to support myself. I told her I didn’t know where to go. She wasn’t angry. She told me I am strong like her and she knows I can make it. She couldn’t afford to keep me. She told me she is so sorry.” .... So, here is this 16-year-old finding herself suddenly all alone on the street. I grabbed her hand and told her how glad I was that she came to us for help. She tried to talk about her experience on the street. “I met a boy and thought I could live with him but that just didn’t work.” Her voice trailed off. “Where have you been sleeping?” I asked. “On park benches,” she said. “Or anywhere I could find a spot.” ... “We would love to have you stay here Dana.” She began to sob uncontrollably. “I would like that.” She whispered so softly I could hardly hear her.

Series 4: My Home is Nowhere: Bite 19) Must I always be alone?

I made sure our staff took extra care of Dana on her first night there. We got her brand new pajamas and I made sure she got a room near her counselors so she could see they were close by her all night. I’m sure she was exhausted and hadn’t had one restful night since she was kicked out of her home. these questions running through her head were certain to keep her awake all night. Her mind must have been asking: “What did I do wrong? Must I always be alone? ... “Can I trust these people? ... “Why doesn’t my Mom love me?” I did know that we would do everything possible to rebuild her life. I prayed extra hard to God that the one question Dana would never think of asking would be this one: “Can I always find hope at the Covenant House?”

Series 4: My Home is Nowhere: Bite 20) The Covenant House Kid’s Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, Please give me the strength to go on through my stay at the Covenant House. Give me the wisdom and the knowledge to do what is right and not wrong. Please give me the strength to make the right decision about the things that occur. I know I haven’t been making the right decisions but I hope I can better that. Life has not been easy for me through these times but I know that You will give me the strength to go on. For I do believe in you and in all that You say and do. AMEN!
